How we cast.
Auditions at Collective Artists Workshop are open, welcoming, and run with care. Here is exactly what to expect, what to prepare, and how to make the most of your time in the room.
The audition process.
Sign up online
When auditions open, a sign-up form is posted on the show's page. Choose a slot that works for you. Walk-ins are welcome at the discretion of the casting team.
Prepare your material
For musicals two songs in contrasting styles that shows your range. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist is provided. For plays, prepare a short monologue (1 to 2 minutes). Sides are sometimes provided in advance. Exact requirements may change based on the production.
Arrive 15 minutes early
You'll fill out a short audition form (conflicts, contact info, headshot if you have one). Wear something you can move comfortably in. No headshot? No problem. We'll take one of you on the day.
The room
You'll meet the director and music director. They may ask you to read sides from the script, sing through a section of music, or learn a short dance combination. Come ready to play. We are rooting for you.
Callbacks
We strive to give every auditionee thoughtful time and attention during initial auditions. If callbacks are needed, selected performers will receive specific sides and/or music to prepare. Please note that not receiving a callback does not necessarily mean you have not been cast.
Casting decisions
Offers go out within a few days of callbacks. Everyone who auditions hears back, whether or not you are cast. We mean that.
Open to all.
No agent, headshot, prior credit, or training required. We cast a wide range of ages and backgrounds depending on the show.
Youth roles in family shows are open to ages 8 and up.
Rehearsal & commitment.
Rehearsal schedules are shared in advance. We work hard to honor conflicts and respect your time, and we ask the same from our cast.
Stipends are occasionally offered when production budgets allow, but cannot be guaranteed for every role or every show.
Tell us what you need.
If you need accommodations to audition (alternate time, accessible entrance, materials in advance, ASL, etc.), email the office at least 48 hours in advance and we will make it happen.
Race, gender, and ability.
We cast inclusively and consider all actors for all roles whenever the script allows. The character breakdown for each show is published in advance and notes any requirements specific to the storytelling.
